Panaji (GOA) After initial tussle, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has finally agreed to hand over 1.71 lakh sq meters of land at Bainguinim to the State government for setting up modernized solid waste treatment facility.
The CCP meeting today resolved to hand over the land to Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) on condition that Government submits an undertaking that the land would be exclusively used for setting up waste treatment facility and the time frame for the same.
The ruling panel, backed by Goa Forward leader Atanasio Monserrate, had initially turned down to hand over the land to Government demanding that an MOU be signed between the three- State, CCP and GWMC, with CCP reserving the right of ownership over the land.
Way back in 2009, CCP had acquired land admeasuring 1, 71,312 sq mts at Bainguinim for the construction of solid waste treatment plant (SWTP), however, the same failed to take shape due to opposition from locals and lack of funding thereafter.
The facility would be built on Design, Build, Operate and Transfer (DBOT) basis in lines with the modernized solid waste treatment plant at Saligao. The project, estimated at the cost of Rs 150 crore, will handle 250 tons of waste daily and will cover the entire Tiswadi taluka
